Angry I have no clue on how to put alien package into synaptic. I have an eee pc

I donīt know anything about computers and I am new to Linux as I usually use Windows. I want to download Sopcast. I now know that I need alien but I donīt know how to use synaptic at all. If someone can baby me and step me through from how to get to it to the final step. Also, when I try to install updates, it says updates failed on the terminal.

Go to http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/admin/alien, download alien. Double click on the file. Gdebi should come up and start to install it.

I need more information on how to install it. I have no clue at all. Not even how to open a synaptic window.
