help, hp 1100 printer wont print, client-error-not-possible

Hi,

I am really new to linux.
I have a debian box not to sure of the version,I got it form my brother so I can find that out.

What I have done so far:
Debian finds the printer on the boot up on lpt1 no problem.

I have installed a HP 1100 on /dev/lp0 with the cups HP Laserjet Series CUPS v1.1 I cant do a test print and I get some error.

I then installed the HP-LaserJet_1100-hpijs.ppd driver and the error went away and it installed fine.
But now I can't do a test print,I get a message telling me the test page was sent to the printer but there is nothing in the jobs.

If i go localhost:631 too cups and try print a test page
it still won't print, if i try restart the print job all I get is Error:

client-error-not-possible

I have looked at howto's and asked for help on irc and nothing is working.
I also need this printer to be shared for windows users.

thanks!

Have you checked log files at /var/log/cups/? In particular 'error_log' may be useful. If you cannot point down the problem, post the last 20 lines or so of error_log.

Sometimes the reason may be really trivial -- I had forgotten to install ghostscript.

Perhaps it helps,
Ott

Hi,

There is alot in that error_log and the bottom line is this:
E [06/Mar/2006:08:00:18 +0200] SLPReg of "hplaser" failed with status -20!

I don't know what it means and there is more then 20 of them so I wont post it all.

I think you are rite about the ghostscript, only thing is I don't know how to install this or use it.

Thanx!

Well,

this message is not informative. At least not for me.

Can you figure out what is in the logs around that time where you try to print?

Some other things to check:

Is your printer connected correctly, into the right port?

Can CUPS see the printer when you are installing it? The modern printers should visible when choosing the printer at cups menu.

Perhaps it helps,
Ott

When debian boots it finds the printer on lp0 no problem there.
So I know its connected, CUPS can see the printer no problem.

As far as I know ghostscript is installed and up to date, I was told: apt-get install gs-gpl

I got this message: gs-gpl is already the newest version.
If what I was told is correct i don't know.

Sorry about this i am running blind here, I really need this printer printing.

Thanx!
