Unhappy fsck error!


Hi
i have a very grave problem.
i didnt have a good UPS, power was off for some time in the morning and then my system rebooted properly after the power came back but later it stopped booting.
It says ......

checking root file system...
Warning fsck exited with signal 11
throwing u to a console
give su passwd for maintenance or press ctrl-d to exit.......

what does it mean?
did i lose my data?
can i recover my data?????????
i dont mind reinstalling the OS
what should i do?
please help

Pointless exclaimative: w00t HDD failure!

Umm, my friend you just might be in trouble. i would suggest booting using something other than your hdd, such as knoppix cd or redhat recovery console for example.

Then run fsck and pray that it will fix whatever error you have on your hdd. if it does not, get the data out of there asap. You can accomplish it via plethora of software included on knoppix disk.
