Exclamation facing problems recompiling kernel 2.6.5 in Fedora Core 2

Hello all
I'm quite new to kernel configurations and recompilation. I had to install Alcatel Speedtouch USB drivers but the installation source gave the error that the kernel is not configured for ATM. So I ran 'make menuconfig' and made the appropriate changes. Now I did the following :
$ make
$ make modules_install

after this i copied bzImage and System.map to /boot but under diff names than the ones that were originally there (i.e., i didn't overwrite the existing image files) .
Please suggest me two things:
1. How can I apply the changes to my original kernel ?
2. How can I make this new kernel compilation a separate kernel entry to boot from ?

hi..

maybe i can help u out.
it is not necessary to make these changes in your old kernel.
I think you just want to run your newly compiled kernel, to use ATM.
So, edit lilo.conf:
You should find your old kernel there (something like this: image='your old kernel's location here')
Now, just copy-paste those 4 lines, BUT replace that image location to where you copied your new kernel (bzImage).
After these type at prompt:lilo
When you reboot, hit <SHIFT>.
Now you can choose, what kernel you want to use.

Hope this helps.Best regards Wolve

Hi,

I think that you must have installed grub as your boot loader instead of lilo. In that case, you need to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf so that it can locate the new kernel installed.

title whatever Kernel
kernel /vmlinuz-x.x.x ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /initrd-x.x.x.img

use the same parameters for "root=" as for your previous kernel

save the above changes and /sbin/grub.install >> to make these changes work :-)

All the Best!

Hey I'm new to Linux. But I recently joined this forum and another one. I wrote a tutorial after recompiling from 2.4.26 -> 2.6.7. Here is a link to the tutorial:

Recompiling Kernel Instructions

Good luck.
