ESD - Sound is laggy - Suggestions?

Both my friend and I are having problems getting sound to work, properly. It works.. Sound gets pumped through the speakers - we're using the esd sound server. I'd run OSS but i'd like to be able to play more then one A/V file at a time.

Examples of problem ----

Under XMMS, the eq is off beat and slugish. When I hit stop, music continues to play for 1-2 seconds then it stops. The Volume slider is slow to respond as well.

This is just XMMS but im pretty sure the problem is with the sound server.

Seems that the sound server reports back to the applications way to slow.

Any ideas?

would ARTS be a better choice?

Try reducing the buffer size for esd.

eSound btw is awful, and aRts isn't much better. This is a known problem, there are currently huge flamewars and discussions going on as we attempt to design something better.

Hopefully soon new distros will start using ALSA with the dmix plugin, which should address a lot of the problems people currently have with sound.
