compatible external computer speakers?

I am running Linux on a desktop and want to use external 5W speakers. Is there a recommendation for linux compatible speakers?

Any.

The ones that plug into the headphone jack work as you would expect. If they're USB speakers then you just use your desktop control panel to send the audio to them, just as you would in Windows. You're using Ubuntu (which uses Pulseaudio), right?
