byobu no longer launches

I have been using Byobu for some time. It no longer launches. The terminal opens and then closes. If I open a terminal and login as root then launch Byobu (sudo -H byobu) it works fine. I am currently using Ubuntu 12.04 (Unity and KDE). Has this happened to anyone else?
