Byobu, Gmail and /var/mail/$user

I have set up mutt to work with my gmail account through imap. I am using byobu over ssh to access my system and was wondering if I could be pointed in the direction of a solution to getting byobu to show new mail from gmail. I noticed that it shows an indicator when mail is received to /var/mail/$user but obviously I don't know how to get this all to link up (if it is at all possible).
