black screen after starting gnome

I just loaded the Debian distribution of Linux and I think I set the screen resolution incorrectly so I just see a black screen after GNOME starts. How do I break out of the startup and get to a command prompt so I can change the resolution to a different one. Or is there an easier way to change the resolution ? Second if I do get to a command prompt how do it change the resolution.

Thanks,
Greg

that did not seem to work. Any other ideas on how to correct the display resolution issue?

what do you mean it didn't work? did it kill X? then what you can do is edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 if you have xfree or /etc/X11/xorg.conf if you have Xorg
