I just installed Redhat 7.3 this past weekend, and I was having issues getting Xserver up and running. During X configuration, when testing / probing the display parms, I would receive a black screen and a machine lockup.
FYI, I'm running with a ASUS A7N266-E motherboard with an integrated Nvidia graphics module.
To correct this, I downloaded the latest video kernel from Nvidia here:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux. (mad props to c0rk3y for mentioning this in an earlier post)
Actually, I needed to download the video kernel and the GLX driver. If you're unsure which version of the kernel you need, try their nifty kernel selector script, NVchooser, located on the same link above.
Once I downloaded and installed those two components, I had to tweak the XF86Config file (actually XF86Config-4 in my case -- check the documentation on the Nvidia site, or your X error log for more info) to access the new driver. There's a few options open to you to accomplish this:
- Tweak your existing XF86Config file
- Use the sample file Nvidia includes in their packages
In both cases, check the Nvidia documentation!
Once that was finished, X started right up for me.
