black screen after hibernate

using linux mint 14.7, and i can't wake it after it after it hibernates. when i hit the power button it says

resuming from ....

then when that goes away i have my indicator light on but nothing on the screen.

I've tried suggestions from a google search and no key press will bring it back up.

suspected video driver issue, I'm pretty sure its an intel hd 4400

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0a16] (rev 0b)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device [1025:0a11]
	Kernel driver in use: i915
00:03.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller [8086:0a0c] (rev 0b)
Code:
sudo lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 | grep "in use"

Kernel driver in use: i915
should i try switching to mesa drivers or something else?

Check if you already have mesa going on.

Code:

Your intel graphics chip is different and newer than mine with that Haswell and i915.

Edit: How big is your /swap partition and how much ram do you have.
I ask because a large /swap partition needs to be tied into hibernate.

looks like i do have mesa

on a side note, thats a really nifty way to use grep to narrow it like that. I'm still learning piping.
