Question Automatic GUI Start Up Problem Using Fedora 7

Hi
Although there are other threads pertaining to display issues, I haven't found one that accurately describes what I'm experiencing, so I'd appreciate help on this:
Previous Issues:
I've installed Fedora 7, it boots up as terminal, at first I could not run the GUI, after I Googled it, I changed my video driver to VESA, it now works fine if I run the startx command,
Problem is:
I was trying to configure it to start up automatically in the GUI, I edited the X11 config to have the default run level 5, it starts up, does show the start up graphically i.e. it shows the pic of the hot air balloon, and shows what its doing e.g. Starting Networking, etc., THEN, when what I think is when the Desktop is supposed to display, the screen goes black / blank, and just stays that way.
I'm currently then just switching sessions usng CNTRL+ALT F2 and rebooting and then using the startx command to use the GUI
What I'v tried so far:
I was advised by a friend that it might be that there could be a conflict with the screen resolution, and that it might work if I turned it down to 800X600, I checked using "setup" and my resolution was 1024X768, I changed it to 800X600, its still didn't solve the problem, and now, I cant change my resolution back to 1024X768, it only gives me 800X600 as an option, I tried changing my screen type but the changes dont save, the screen stays 800X600 and when I go back into the setup, it still shows as 800X600.
So, I have a big ugly display thanx to my 800X600 resolution, and I still cant get it to start up automatically on the GUI, I'm beginning to think I'm gonna have to change my monitor to one which is listed on the setup, isn't there anything I can try ? My monitor is a Forefront DH-1764M - is it just a crappy monitor ?

You say you changed the X11 config to init 5, but what does /etc/inittab have for the default runlevel?

I am not using FC currently, but when you say X11 config file were you talking /etc/inittab?

To terminate a GUI you could try <ctl-alt-backspace>.

Have you checked the X11 logs in /var/log (I think) for errors?
Or any other logs?

In X you can cycle through your resolutions using <ctl-alt-KEYPAD_PLUS> and <ctl-alt-KEYPAD_MINUS>.
You said you changed the resolution using setup, are we talking /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
Did you check it?
