Automake installAutoconf error

I'm on Mandrake 10, installed autoconf-2.13.tar.gz with:
./configure
make
make install

Everything went smoothly... but when trying to install automake-1.9.tar.gz i get this error:
configure: error: the installed version of autoconf does not work.
Please check config.log for error messages before this one.

What to do ?
