Arrow ahhhhhhh there's monkey chasing me!!!

there isn't actually a monkey after me But it does seems that my computer doesn't like linux

After i installed linux mandrake 8.0 on my computer, and i started the X gui, everything seemed to be fine. But when i start re-positioning a window on the screen, or start scrolling, i can actually see the windows being redrawn. It's as if i'm running linux on a 1Hz computer!!! Everything else seems to be fine, but this slow gui redraw problem is really pi**ing me off.

My computer specs:
amd athlon 1.4Ghz
ati radeon 7000
etc....

So anyone got a solution?

Well... First, I would recommend you to get a newer Mandrake 9.1 is way cooler then 8.0 (this if you really want to use Mandrake ). In a second place, I believe the problem you are having with graphics slowdown, is due something have been wrong configured.. either your graphics card or monitor refreshing. Check them into your display properties. If everything seems to be fine anyway, try to get ATI drivers ( must be somewhere, I use Nvidia myself so...)

Good luck

To rule out configuration issues, I recommend Knoppix. This distribution works and starts completely from CD without messing with your harddisk.

See :

http://www.knoppix.net
http://www.knoppix.net/get.php

How does Knoppix run on that system?

If Knoppix works alright, consider trying another distribution, like Mandrake Linux 9.1 or Red Hat Linux 9.

Good luck.
