I use yahoo messenger on a simple desktop setup using ipchains (2.2 kernel -- don't ask ). I use the "No Proxies" settings, and it works fine for simple IM. If somebody tries to send me a file via Yahoo Messenger, the program crashes. That might (or might not) be related to the other client not being able to get through my firewall.

(My understanding is that straight messaging is handled by both clients talking to a central server, which a (not overly restrictive) firewall will handle fine, but that exchanging files directly requires direct peer to peer connection, which is a stickier issue.)

GAIM provides both these features

Using Kubuntu, Ubuntu, and Fedora Core for years I have never had any problems when using gaim for file transfers or the non proxy setup. Yahoo, MSN and others will try their own proxy settings and then switch to port 80 or other common open ports to operate.

I am using Mandriva, and the Internet connection on my network is forwarded through port 3128 (squid proxy server); I use shorewall as the firewall. In order to get Yahoo working I had to add the following to /etc/shorewall/rules:

# Allow Yahoo!

ACCEPT loc fw tcp 5050 -
ACCEPT fw loc tcp 5050 -

ACCEPT loc fw udp 5050 -
ACCEPT fw loc udp 5050 -

Personally, I would MUCH rather just block the yahoo and msn master (IM) servers and forbid access to them.

This can be done in both squid (via a blacklist) and via firewall rules in shorewall.

i have rules, and able to connect using iptables, but as i setup proxy authentication, it starts problem using "No network detection/No firewall" configuraiton, if i setup it as proxy client (yahoo proxy settings) prompts for password and able to connect.

Using proxy setting makes some problem like no voice chat.

1. i also want proxy authentication
2. Voice chat using yahoo messenger.

Any idea ?
