wake on lan magic packet does not wake.

Hey Guys,

This is sort of off topic but I have not had any luck on other sites and, besides, Linux guys usually have solutions to problems like this because we tinker the most.

I have a Dell C600 laptop with the 3Com 10/100 mini PCI Ethernet Adapter. The laptop BIOS version is A20.

No matter what I try it will not Wake On LAN. I’ve enabled all appropriate settings in the BIOS, I even have win 2K installed on it right now because I read on the Dell support site that this is the only OS that supports it (where I specifically went into the Network Properties and configured the Power Management tab to allow the device to bring the computer out of standby – I read somewhere that I had to do this.)

Anyway, I’ve tried everything that I can think of. I’m hoping that someone here has had to administer this laptop at their work back when they were new.

Maybe there a specific port UDP port that the magic has to be addressed too? I’ve got other computers waking on the magic packet that I send went sent to their MAC addrs. Only this laptop will not wake.

I’ve googled this problem and found only one post on another site where someone had the exact problem. There was no reply.

Thanks for any help.

Hi.

It's most likely that your ethernet card doesn't support WOL. My main machine is like this - BIOS supports it, but the on-board ethernet 'card''s WOL pins aren't attached to anything, so it doesn't work.
