Exclamation Verizon DSL/ROUTER troubles in MEPIS via USB

I am running Mepis 6 beta 4.

I have a Westel 6100 series DSL modem. the problem is that i have run out of ideas on making it connect to the internet via USB.

My modem is both a router and modem combined, and i have it connected to a USB cable as it is currently the only way i can connect it to my computer. I know that verizon uses PPPoE, and i have tried RP-PPPoE 3.8 from roaring penguin and, that was of no help. Also upon reading the info about rp-pppoe it said it was unnessecary with routers, which i dont know if my situation applies to that or not. From what i have read, i see that sometimes people get what they needed and typically people just have to buy a router, but again.. is my situation applying as I have a router.. or not.

maybe i dont have something configured right?..

I do get a connection when i use the IP address I have on WinXP, so i used those settings, but there is something in Linux for a broadcast address, and there is nothing i could find in windows about that, and the auto DHCP does not work.. so if anyone could be of assistance, it would be greatly appriciated.

Tyan trinity 400 (s1854)
256 mb ram
2 physical hds
- 7 gb (whole drive to MEPIS)
- 80 gb (2 parts, win part with secondary part [60gb\20gb])
pentII 450 (overclocked at 504mhz)

Could you clarify a few things. Do you get a internet connection that works with WinXP? Not sure from what you posted.

Can you open up any configuration screens with your router/modem? The ones I have worked with ( don't know the make or model you have ) the router will have a default IP address configured when you buy it. You open up a browser, and type the default IP address, and press enter. That should connect you to your router and its configuration.

You will have to look into the router to see if it provides PPPoE or not. Mine does, and I know some other brands do also. So, have a look at the documentation to see if PPPoE is in the router or not. If it is not in there, you will need to install a PPPoE program on your linux box.

Could you open a konsole and run the command "/sbin/ifconfig" ( without the quotes ) and post the results. That will tell us if you have an IP addres.

Post back, and we'll go from there.

It is the routers address you want to put into the address bar, to see if you can connect to the router. This is how most of them are configured.
