two nics--ftp on outside nic--samba on inside nic

i am having trouble connecting to my outside (public ip) nic for ftp access. i have a samba share that is linked to the same directory. i want to be able to connect via samba from inside the network, and have ftp access to the directory from outside the network. i took the firewall down and allowed all traffic and get the same problem. i don't know if samba using the same directory would cause the problem. i get connection closed by server error when trying to connect through the public ip nic. i can connect from the local network no problemo. the server has been running great for about 30 days or so without reboot. samba works perfect. ftp from inside works perfect. i don't really know what to put in here. hoping maybe one of you has experienced same thing before. i will post any information here that may be useful for someone willing to assist me on this. thanks in advance.

I have never had a problem but maintain a similar setup. Connections are sucessful from your private network but not from a public ip. That could mean your ftp server is configured as such; post your configuration file. Is this machine connected directly to the internet or is it behind a router of some sort?
