I tried installing KDE (the default was GNOME).
I rebooted, logged in to KDE and all problems disappeared. The problem is certainly with GNOME.
I should have known better, actually. This sort of thing has happened to me with two other distros... I install with GNOME, strange things don't work or are random, install KDE, switch sessions, problems gone.
I am at the point where, if a distro defaults to GNOME, I will just install KDE, before I even touch anything.
Don't like GNOME anymore. Looks nice but is too flakey for me.
