SNR testing on LAN and WAN

I have been noticing that my VOIP ATA adapter and my firewall have been drop their connection but what that happens that cable modem does not. I have switched out the cables and have eliminated that. I called my cable modem manufacturer and they say that the cable modem is ok. My laptop drop connection directly connected to the cable modem so I suspect that it is the cable modem or the line. My question is how does one perform SNR tests or other diagnostic utilities to trouble shoot an issue like this?
