LAN but no WAN

Hi,

I'm trying to help someone get their linux machine (Slack 10.2, 2.6.13) working on their work network. Since they're a "we won't give you any support for linux" kind of shop, I'm helping to set it up.

They use static ip addresses. So I edited the rc.inet1.conf to add the static ip and rebooted. I am able to bring up the network interface and can ping the gateway and be pinged by others, but whenever I enter an external ip I get a network unreachable error.

I also tried "borrowing" someone else's static ip, and got the same result.

Any ideas of what to check?

Thanks,
Brian

Is this machine dual boot?
Does the other OS work?

If this is a new seperate machine then the following might be the issue.
If you define an IP, Gateway, DNS, and Subnet same as the other machines except different IP of course then one thing I can think of is mac filtering might be enabled. To test this goto one of the other machines and get the IP and mac address of the nic. Turn that machine or unplug the ethernet cable. Now on the linux machine use the IP from the other machine and bring up the interface. Now from a terminal session with the interface still up run the command as root ' ifconfig eth1 hw ether **.**.**.**.**.** ' Replace the **.**.**.**.**.** with the mac of the other card. See if that works. If it does you can try a different IP and see if that works. If it stops working then they are mac filtering based on IP as well.

Brian1,

It's not dual boot.

I was told that they did not do MAC filtering, but I'll test it anyway as you describe.

Thanks,
Brian

I've solved this problem. The gateway configuration wasn't working.

Thanks,
Brian
