Question setting up an ADSL

Hi,

I'm just got broadband. This is what I want to do

I want to connect my RH9 box (nothing set up yet -any help?) to the modem. The RH9 box is going to be my gateway which will have an XP box and a couple of laptops on it. I would love this to be wireless but I'm more concerned to just getting it to work so a wired one would be fine.

My question is
what hardware do I need to buy. I only have the RH9 box and the computers. I need to make them a network but just don't know what hardware I need. Any advice or list of actual hardware would be great.

Thanks

Lovage

this is easier than you might think!

Are you in the UK? Is it ADSL (Telephone) or is it DSL (Cable broadband)?

Assuming that you have a telephone broadband system.

Buy an ADSL Modem Router - something like this http://www.nickknows.com/description...67&category=88 (I just found this by googling, I've no connection with the company!) - The Netgear DG634 is nice!

Buy some cable and some network cards if there aren't any in the PC's already!

You now have everything you need!

This box becomes your gateway, and you can add an ethernet based Wireless Access Point to it at a latter date to give you a wireless connection (or buy the wireless version anyway!)

To set it up its just a case of putting it together, network cards in all the PC's, cable it up and switch on the router. This will automatically make contact with the broadband and start broadcasting to your lan.

You need to set up the network cards in the PC's so that they know where the gateway is (possibly 192.168.0.1) and set it up for DHCP. That's netconfig on the LInux boxes, Control Panel - Network connections on XP

Once everything is switched on, it should start talking to each other and you can just do your internet thing!

BTW, this might sound very easy, but RTM just to be safe!

Hope this helps!

Hi F0ul_Olli

Yeah I'm in the UK (sticks) - so just getting broadband.

ADSL is the nature of the beast.....

So I just stick a cable from the modem to the RH9 box with a ethernet card. I then stick another card in the RH9 box to talk to the XP PC.what about my laptops?? Do you mean the modem becomes the gateway?

I was kind of hoping to make the RH9 box the gateway as its more of a chance to learn RH9.

Thanks for the fast response....

Let me do a simple picture as it might help.

bt - ADSL Router
| | | |

Linux | | XP

LT1 LT2

By using the ADSL Router for everything you are reducing the problems you might have - and your reducing the load on your equipment.

There are plenty of things you can do to learn redhat like making the box a webserver using Apache or using it as a mail server etc - it doesn't need to be first in line to be able to offer these services.

In reality, not many people would connect a good machine and use it as a gateway - it just makes it to easy to be comprimised. Remember, the router also acts as a firewall, and because it is only doing one job its more stable and when your redhat pc is off (turned off - why??) then the other PC's can still access the internet.

Does that make things clearer to you?

what an awful picture!!

What I was trying to show is that there are 4 ports in the router and all the pc's connect up to the router!
