Samba on a local network
So I have just moved back home from college, and my network currently consists of two machines and a switch. The "client" is a Windows XP box, and the "server" is running RedHat 7.2 and Samba (not sure of the version, whichever comes bundled with RH 7.2). These two machines are talking to each other just fine, except for Samba.
The Windows box won't map to the server, claiming to be unable to find it:
C:\>net use t: \\192.168.0.2\users
System error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.
The server won't map to itself either, if you try to do it by its IP address:
[root@scheidjm-sec samba]# smbclient //192.168.0.2/users
added interface ip=192.168.0.2 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
added interface ip=127.0.0.1 bcast=127.0.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session request to 192.168.0.2 failed (Not listening for calling name)
session request to 192 failed (Not listening for calling name)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Not listening for calling name)
If you replace the IP address with "localhost" in the command line, it works fine.
The following lines appear in the log:
[2002/05/09 13:00:07, 0] lib/access.c:check_access(320)
Denied connection from (192.168.0.2)
[2002/05/09 13:00:07, 0] smbd/connection.c:yield_connection(62)
yield_connection: tdb_delete failed with error Record does not exist.
These lines are repeated three times for each connection attempt, and they look the same, whichever box is trying to connect.
My configuration was exactly the same when I was on a "real" network as it is now, and I had no problems. I don't want to use NetBIOS names, I just want to map by IP address, but I can't even do that. So, to make a long story short, does ANYBODY have any idea what the problem here is?
