Samba and Print issues on home network

I just set up a computer with the Mepis6.0 distribution on my home network. Besides the Linux box I have a desktop system running WindowsXp Pro (OFFICE) and a notebook running WindowsXP Home. I have a shared HP printer on the desktop. I'm using a router with a DHCP Server.

What's working:

The Linux machine can see any shared folder on the other computers and link to them.

The Windows machines can see and link to the shares on each other.

The notebook can print to desktop machine printer.

On the Windows machines the "Mepisgrp" shows up as group in "My Network Places".

What's not:

On the Windows machines I cannot see my home directory (or any other) in the "Mepisgrp" even though it is shared and anyone can look at it. If I click on the group I get "Mepisgrp is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource..."

I cannot link to and print to the Desktop machine from the Linux box. The share name of the printer is "hppsc210.2". From the notebook the printer shows up as "\\OFFICE\hp psc 2100 series" in the MSHOME group. Through the KDE Configure utility I've set up the URI as "smb://MSHOME//OFFICE/hp psc 2100 series" or "smb://MSHOME//OFFICE/hppsc210.2" and tried using the guest or valid account. The printer doesn't show up when I scan. When I print a test page the message "Test page sucessfully sent to HPAllinOne" but the print job just stays in the Queue.

The other thing I've noticed is that I can't ping the Linux box from the Windows computer either. Pinging works from Windows to Windows, and Linux to Windows.

In summary I have sharing of folders from the Windows machines, but not from the Linux box. My print sharing is working but not from the Linux box.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Dave

regarding the sharing check your smb.conf and smbd status.
Regarding the printing go to the properties of the shared printer and un - check the box that says something like bidirectional. Then it'll be printed.
