routing between 2 nics


Hi to everybody. I have a pc with debian 6 (without GUI) installed on it and want to use it as server at home. It has 2 ethernet nics. Now i want to configure the routing process. Searched internet for a long time found something but couldn't get it work. Please help. Posting the picture what i want to achieve. Thanks to everybody.

What kind of server do you want to run?

And for the record, I LOL'd at your picture....

From the diagram, it looks like you are wanting the Linux server to act as a firewall.

Is that accurate or do you not care about restricting traffic/protocols?

There would be mail, web server. I just want to practice.

Actually yes. I want to control all the internet traffic.

If you are looking to control all traffic, you will want to build up a firewall. Have a look here:

Here is a brief list of already made distributions made just for firewalls, monitoring, etc. You can also check out distrowatch.com.

Can i do this with debian? For the first time please help in just routing. After that please give me some material for doing everything myself. BECAUSE I want to learn.

Sure. Learn the ins and outs of iptables, and how to use forwarding rules. Here is the man page to start:

As far as routing, here is one option:

The internet has many resources. Try searching on google, you will find a lot of topics about what you want to do.

For what you want to to do, it is simpler than configuring IPTABLES.

All you should need to do is enable IP forwarding.
