realtek rtl8139 driver fails to load for kernel 2.4.18
im booting a pc with linux kernel 2.4.18, to image the harddrive. the nic driver is a Realtek RTL8139, or so it states on the onboard chip. when i boot with my disks, it doesnt load the 8139 driver, but uses mii and 8390 instead. i have tried to manually load 8139too.o and 8139cp.o but neither works. it comes up with a whole list of "unresolved symbols" errors. i have downloaded a driver from realtek for this card, but it needs to be compiled . I am very-very new to Linux and do not know anything about compiling. please could someone point me in the right direction or inform me where im going wrong.
thanks
werner jonas
Don't know if this will work but it's worth a try. Try "modprobe 8139too" without the quotation marks. Leave that ".o" off the end. If your running something like Fedora try "/etc/init.d/network/ restart" to restart or start the card. I dont know what the command is on other distros. You could also look at trying a newer kernel like 2.4.26 and that might resolve some issues.
thanks for tip, when i try modprobe, as you said, it comes up with error: "/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/8139too.o : kernel-module version mismatch /lib/modules..... was compiled for kernel version 2.4.20 while this kernel version is version 2.4.18."
how can i change the kernel on my bootdisk to either be 2.4.20 or get a kernel 2.4.18 and compile the file with that same kernel??? any ideas??
