realtek rtl8139

I am trying to use realtek rtl8139 pcmcia card and am encountering the following problems:

when trying to load the 8139too module, I get the error "init_module: No such device"

The card is inserted in the slot, and "cardctl ident" shows the vendor and model type. The power light indicates that it inserted correctly.

Any tips on where to start debbugging would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In fact it turns out the card is not rtl8139 but instead rtl8180... I dloaded the driver off the Realtek website, compiled and installed and it loads fine when I insert the card. However, after about 30 seconds of inserting the card, the computer freezes and there is nother I can do about it other than reboot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
