Networking Debian 5.0.3 i38 and Windows XP Proffesional ?


Well i have one pc debian and another windows xp,and now i want to connect them,i googled about samba but mine pcs arent connected at all :\
i set the adress to xp 192.168.0.1 and gateway 192.168.1.1 so i tried to do this at debian but i dont know how can anybody tell me how?

These are two separate sub-net addresses.

The first task is to get a physical connection. Have you got that? If yes, please tell us what it is. Do you have a router, or a hub? Are you trying to get a direct connection working?

The Debain system and XP system need to be on the same sub-net, unless you have routers.

ex. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 on the other.

A gateway address identifies the IP address to the internet. Usually this is a router with an internet connection.

Once you sort out the physical connection, and can 'ping' between the two systems, then you can tell us how you want to use files between the two systems. Samba makes the linux system into a file server. It is not a trivial thing to get working. You also have to do some setup in XP.

well i managed somehow to do it the connection was over the switch and i typed just
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.2
and it worked but i had to restart my comp
