Unhappy /lib/modules.dep empty

hi all,

i have a debian with 2.4.20 kernel
i try to enable my 2 network interfaces as modules

/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/net# ls -ls
total 100
40 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 37996 Sep 24 14:40 3c59x.o
28 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 27068 Sep 24 14:40 8139too.o
12 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10052 Sep 24 14:40 8390.o
8 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4960 Sep 24 14:40 mii.o

when i try to install them with modprob, it does not work :
/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/net# modprobe 3c59x
modprobe: Can't locate module 3c59x

i found that /lib/modules.dep was curiously empty .
When i put the modules to be loaded in, i does work but, normaly, when my machine reboot, this file is cleared.

I suppose there is a dependancy missing somewhere .

could someone helps me ?

thanks a lot
regards
