GLIB in RH 9.0

Has anyone had any problems with glib on rh 9. I tried to install xchat and ./configure complained that it could not find version of glib >= 2.2.0. Did an rpm -q and this was output:
glib-1.2.10-10
glibc-devel-2.3.2-27.9
glib2-2.2.1-1
glibc-kernheaders-2.4-8.10
glibc-2.3.2-27.9
glibc-common-2.3.2-27.9

Seems like there's 2 different glib packages installed and the one that the xchat finds is the lower version. Tried uninstalling it but there is like 100 dependencies (and who knows how many more for the other ones)... Installed the new version of glib from tgz, but that did not help either.
Any input is appreciated!!

PS Already tried to run ./configure --disable-glibtest , it still looks for it...

You don't want to upgrade glib if you can help it. And glib is the lower version, yes. glibc, glib2, and glib are not the same libraries. In general on rpm systems, if an app version doesn't like your compiler, don't use the app. It's a horrible headache.
