General Netowrk Security Questions

Hi -
I am about to build a drake 10.1 box as a postfix mail server with a few plug ins. I was wondering what all am I going to have to open up to allow sshd and postfix to accept connections. I was poking around and saw the xinetd.d and the xinetd.conf file and they didnt seem to have much in them. I also checked the hosts.allow and hosts.deny files and found some stuff. But on this preliminary build i cant even get a ping back - but i can ping out - thus not a networking problem. Bygones - I have been away from linux for a while and need to get back at it. Thanx Fella's

Welcome to LQ.

Do you have any firewall rules defined?
iptables -nL

No sir - I should have mentioned that - I didnt even install it, iptables that is. Just to be sure not to get hung there.
iptables -nL = bash: iptables: command not found
forgive me not mentionng that before hand.
Thanx

Can you just double check with:
/sbin/iptables -nL

Are the services listening ok?
netstat -nlp

What error do you get when you try to connect?

Are you trying to connect to the machine over a LAN?

Still no luck I think it must be the High security settings I choose. I just can't figure out what its using to block all my traffic.
Any ideas where I can get the syntax for hosts.allow and hosts.deny and information xinetd.d and .conf?
Where else could it be blocking me out at.?
Thanx
