General Security

Hi, I've just installed slack 10- my first linux install ever.

Just curious. I know that linux is more secure than windows (i have a strong windows background, thus my insecurities...)

I go to college, and am on a school network. Do I need to install a firewall? How do I update my slack box? How much should I worry?

Andrew

Threats are always present: there will always be script kiddies scanning the whole Internet to find vulnerable machines. A firewall is always a good idea to control incoming/outgoing connections.

As for updating, get swaret. It checks a list of mirrors for new packages or package updates. It's pretty neat.

I wouldn't worry that much if I were you. My slack router gets "attacked" often but it's mostly portscans or people trying to find anonymous ftps and such. With a properly configured firewall and updated system, don't have any worries

I've heard of swaret...where can I get it?

What firewall should I run with Linux? I want something that won't rape CPU...I"m going with linux because it's quicker (no virus protection or firewalls/daily updates!).

You can get swaret at http://www.swaret.org

As for a firewall.. I use iptables. You make your own rules and control everything.

Go look at http://www.freshmeat.net and search firewall.
