connecting two linux boxes together


i am trying to connect two linux machines together using a cross over cable. but i am not able to ping from either machine to the other machine. one machine is running fedora core 6 which is run on vmware and then other fedora core 5

need help is there any thing i have to configure

Well, are the interfaces correctly configured using different IP addresses? Since it is configurated, it should works.

There is some basic configuration you need to do.
We cannot help you do this because you have not told us your distro, and different ones do it differently (linux is not windows!).
Most people edit their user profile so their distro is visible beneath their name (Hint!) Edit: Oops - you did, it's FC5/6. Pls. see the link below.

Anyway, this is the link that started me on networking. Don't panic, it is simpler than you think, just take things step-by step, and view it as a little puzzle that needs to be solved.
