Connecting Windows boxes via Linux server

Hello all!

Here's my situation:
I have two Windows boxes (2000 and XP Pro) and one Linux (Slackware 10.0) server at home.
The Linux box has two network cards, which are seen by the system. One is eth0, the other eth1.
What I would like to do is to connect one Windows box to one NIC, the second one to another NIC and make these two computers connected via Linux box "see" each other - ping, share resources etc.
One of the Windows boxes (2000) is connected to an ADSL Internet line (hopefully not for long, because I would like Linux to take over this duty) and it has the following IP: 10.0.0.1
The other Windows box is 10.0.0.111 and the Linux box is 10.0.0.10.
The network mask for all the machines is 255.255.255.0.

My questions are:
- how do I make it possible and what is it called - is it routing, masquarading, bridging?
- should each of the NICs have a different IP address assigned to it?

Should any more details be necessary, please let me know. I'll provide them as soon as possible.

Regards to all!

Why do you want to "What I would like to do is to connect one Windows box to one NIC, the second one to another NIC?" Are you using crossover cables?

Network all three of your PC's and try to Ping the M$ Boxes from your Nix box.

Do you want to set up your Nix Box as a router or Proxy server? Do you want to share files with your M$ Boxes?

Roach,

I am using crossover cables. Since I already have those two NICs and cables I wouldn't like to spend my money on a hardware router or a switch. The reason why I want to establish a connection between these two Win boxes is such that I would like to be able to manage the Linux box remotely from one of the Windows machines (via ssh with Putty) AND be able to access the internet at the same time. Since the internet is connected to Win2k I would like to find a way to reach it via the Linux box which I could manage from my WinXP as well. Also, I would like to move the internet connection from one of the Windows to the Linux box and share it among the machines.
So, is there a way to do it?
How should my network cards be configured to allow such communication? Should they have different IPs? Should I setup routing for this purpose?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Sebastian

One more question: what would be the advantages of setting up my Linux box as a router and what advantages would there be to a proxy server? Why would I want to set up a proxy server?

Regards,
Sebastian

Look at www.webmin.com for an easy to use Network setup/maintenence solution.

Look at www.squid-cache.org for a proxy server solution.

R :-)
