Its working finally!!!! This is what I did subsequent to my phone conversation with Gary

I setup RH 8.0
I configured the network adapter interface to eth0
downloaded roaring penguine PPPOE software
and setup PPPoE through adsl-setup
Ran adsl-start, but got the same problem as I have mentioned in the begining of this thread.

This time around, I followed the instruction given in the site and ran adsl-start in debug mode, as DEBUG=1 adsl-start.

I then went through the debug output and realized to my dismay that the PASSWORD was set wrongly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...I then gave the correct password and it started working...Feeling very foolish of myself..
But the good thing is I would have spent nearly a month trying to setup verizon DSL on my RH and in that process I learnt a lot about linux.
