Um good reason to get a cisco r
This tutorial has some specifics to the HP dv9000z laptop, however, much of it is applicable to xen and specifically xen on a laptop. I am writing this because I hope to prevent headaches for others in their endeavor to setup xen.
outer is to learn the IOS especially if you want to take the cisco cert exams. Reality is the world uses cisco and knowing how to administer them is a valuable skill.

if you want a real router, try a 1600 series or an 800 series, for cheap ones... in terms of what's most worth having as a first lab is probably two routers, e.g. 805's with a back to back DCE / DTE cable which will let you establish serial links between the two boxes. that's best for learning, but would kinda suck if you want to actually use it as part of a LAN...

personally i wouldn't recommend it. if you want to get familiar with IOS, you can use zebra or quagga which are linux routing environments which are *insanely* similar to IOS and will actually be useful...

that would be a "paste-o" a guess... those two lines are clearly from a different post... without it:
