Can not get a gigabit link

My problem is that I can not get my Linux machine to detect my gigabit network right after the boot up. If I click YAST and then network adapters, it takes a few seconds to re-detect the NIC's and then it links up with my network at gigabit speeds fine. I am trying to figure out how to set it up to where I can just boot up the machine and have it connected at gigabit speeds right away. I am using SUSE 9.2 with a Gigabit Realtek PCI card. This is my first try at Linux and I am still very GUI dependent. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply. I downloaded and ran the rpm for ethtool and it seems to be installed. How do I actually run the program to make the setting changes? Thanks again...sorry for the noob questions.

Info on linux commands and software is usually found in the man page for it.
Code:
man ethtool
You also have the man pages online here.
