Update Mint12 to Mint13?

I'm fairly new to linux. Been using Mint12 LFXE for a brief period, and now want to update to mint13-mate. I've d/l the dvd and would like to know can I install it on top of 12, or must I format the 12?Thanks for any help.

I don't use Mint, but it seems that as with most distributions, there are instructions on how to upgrade:

It is *not* really recommended to "upgrade" with this way.

- rather - you should preform a 'clean' install . . .

However, if you must upgrade this way - use a separate /home partition,
& just upgrade the /root partition.
