No System Sound

I did a search on this but I didn't find a proposed solution that works on my computer.

No system sound at all - login splash screen, alarm/timer, incoming email (webmail through Firefox). No sound from any of them. Installed Pulseaudio but no fix.

External sound sources like youtube Spotify etc. work fine through onboard speakers and headphones.

Mint 18, Cinnamon 3.0/Intel i3 Duo-core 1.8Ghz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, 64bit.

Help appreciated. Thank you.

Have you tried the tool alsamixer (from package called alsa-utlis or similar)? Usually pulse should fix that by itself. Did you check the pulseaudio settings / mixer levels?

@ TiTIAN: Thanks. System sound fixed. Pulseaudio was muted. Frefox sound not fixed. Will post that in a separate new thread.

I don't get it. Mint needs a separate app to make its own system sound work, but doesn't mention that. When it is discovered, Pulsaudio downloads and installs defaulted to mute, with the mute toggle in an obscure greyed out button.
