Thinkpad R60e, wireless question

hello all you nice people

I have not used (any) linux for a couple of years now, and I would like to try it, to see in what direction it went in all this time

I have IBM R60e laptop. I had used PCBSD, samo opensuse (that was new in 2006. )...
I remember that it had little problem with wireless card. It could not work on this computer out of the box. On any distribution, and I tried couple of them... Problem was that some od kernel "staff" was set to modules or have not been "*", and this kind of wireless adapter must be set in kernel like "*"...
I tried to make my one kernel, tried couple of times, but it never worked...

My wireless is "11a/b/g wireless LAN Mini Express Adapter" by Atheros Communications Inc.

So if you now, from your experience what nowdays distribution would work with it... So that I do not have to compile new kernel...

And second question is that I have Vodafone mobile connect, USB stick by HUAWEI Mobile like this one: http://www.vipnet.hr/cw/show?idc=27895359&idnews=603797... And it is maybe even more important that it workes than wireless...

Many thanks for help, and sorry for my english... Im not often on foreign forum

Try downloading the latest OpenSuSE (11.1), which will probably support your hardware right out of the box.

If you want to go with the 2006 version, you'll have to give a better problem description than "some od kernel "staff"".....

Atheros work fairly well in Linux these days.. the question is WHICH atheros card is in your laptop.. There are a couple different drivers available depending on which chip was used for your wireless. http://madwifi-project.org/wiki

There are docs and how-to's available for various distributions of Linux.
I have a Atheros chip in my Netbook and it's running fine under Debian testing

Apparently there is a driver available for the vodaphone cards. .
