Setting up Chubby Puppy - internet & e-mail

Hi I'm new to Linux & Chubby Puppy on disc looks like just what I want to ease myself in.
I've burned the disc and loaded it but not set up the pup.001.zip

However, I connect to the internet via USB cable to ADSL router and Chubby Puppy does not appear to incorporate this option. Is there a way round this?
Also, my docs are on a flash drive which Chubby Puppy opened OK but would not open any of the MS Word or Excel docs therein! What am I doing wrong?

I'm a beginner so please be gentle and please excuse any/all dumb questions !
Thanks

Puppy should just work with any broadband connection, have you tried it ? Does puppy have Openoffice installed ? That is the program you would want to open your MS docs with. Sorry I don't know much about puppy. Have you considered using Ubuntu ? It' very newbie friendly, most stuff just works right out of the box, so to speak.

Hope this helps a bit....

open up a consle window and type "ifconfig" this will tell you if puppy found your cable modem and set it up as an interface.

puppy doesn't have open office installed out of the box, but you can get a .pup file that installs easily. Puppy linux is similar to knoppix, in that it is a live cd and meant for recovery, however, it differs in that it has its own package manager. It allows you to download precompiled packages. It doesn't come with GCC which i found to be a pain in the butt to live without.

Thanks for these replies. I've been trying to get internet connection with USB to USB on ADSL router but Chubby Puppy wants an ethernet connection which I don't have. Very keen to keep with a version of Linux, any simple suggestions on how to use the USB method which works fine with my MS windows?
Also, with Linux live CDs etc what firewalls & anti-virus protection do I need?
Thanks

in order to get ur usb dsl modem to work in linux, you need the driver. you can start by checking /lib/modules

since i haven't used puppy in awhile, i don't know if they compiled those modules.

as far as a firewall, ipchains is the most common. I've never used anti-virus software with linux, maybe else could recamend one

after doing a bit of research i found out that "iptables" is replacing ipchains due to an expliot in ipchains.
