Problem with Linux installation on Acer Travelmate 4602N

Hi,
My Acer Travelmate 4602NWLMI has the following configuration:-
1. Intel Centrino Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz
2. 512MB DDR2 RAM (533 MHz).
3. 60 GB HDD.
4. 64 MB Mobility Radeon X700 PCI-Express.
6. Dual-layer DVD writer

I am only able to install mandrake 10.1 official properly on it. I have tried to install Mandrive Linux 2006 free edition but inspite of a smooth installation and detection of all hardware it is getting stalled after booting and only displays "Uncompressing Linux... booting linux kernel" and stays there. I have tried to install fedora core 4 but it also gives the same message. I have also tried to install Suse 10.0 OSS but it is not able to able to start the X server inspite to recognizing the mobility radeon X700 and with a low resolution of 640X480.

As Mandrake 10.1 is quite old. I want to upgrade it to a newer distribution.

If anyone is able to got other linux versions installed on this machine please guide me

Thanks
shibdas

I had the same problem on an acer aspire 1690. It's a problem with acpi. To test if this is the case, reboot and as soon as you see the lilo selection screen hit the Esc key. That will take you to a boot prompt at which you should type:

linux noapic nolapic acpi=force

Then press Enter.

If that doesn't work, try using:

linux noapic nolapic acpi=off

I'm fairly certain it will boot. If it does, post back and I'll show you how to edit /ect/lilo.conf so you don't have to hit the Esc key every time you boot.
