Question Linux laptop fan problem

Hi all ...
Im new to linux but from what ive seen so far i really would like to make the permanent transition away from windows. first off im running fedora core on a hp pavilion ze4300 . Its a dual boot with win xp home ,here is my problem:::

when i run fedora or mandrake 9.2 for that matter the cpu fan is constantly on high power ....gets kinda annoying listening to that...i was wondering what i would have to do to get that fixed i have never yet configured a kernel but if thats what needs to be done im not afraid to get my hands dirty... i believe it has something to do with acpi..... if any one has had this problem , or is having this problem right now let me know thanks.............

The same thing used to annoy me. Then I took the plunge and compiled a kernel for myself and its much better. Theres a good guide on how to do it on this site.
