I have Mandriva linux installed on an acer 4005wli that is dual booted with windows xp. My modem is detected by Mandriva as Ati Technologies inc|Ixp Ac’97 Modem. My linux system is on the D:\ Drive. Kppp will go as far as Initializing then seems to disapear. I couldn't figure out why so i loaded kppp through the terminal and this is what i get:

Is this a winmodem? Winmodems can work under Linux but not real good. If it is a winmodem, may I suggest a true hardware modem, one that connects to the serial port. I have bought used ones at local ISP shops before for $10.00 or so.

If you know this is a true hardware modem, do you have ppp in your kernel or the module loaded? According to a google4linux search it looks for ppp right after that.
