Disable touchpad only on Thinkpad T440p

Hi there,

I am running Ubuntu 13.10 on the T440p, I want to disable the touchpad, so that I can use the left and right button as usual with the Trackpoint, I am more used to the old design of the touchpad, this one very bad the worst of all design extremely hard to use, I would rather spend a small amount to install back the old touchpad if Lenovo sell it !!

I could not simply disable the touchpad without disable the hidden left right buttons at the same time, is that a way to do it ?

i think you could set the touchpads sensitivity to zero, thus still be able to use the buttons.
while i was still using ubuntu i was able to make use of this arch wiki topic, both manual setup via config file and with a gui (gpointing-device-settings).
on ubuntu things are a bit different, but there's still a LOT of useful info.

hope this helps.

Maybe setting in bios.

Could stop that device or not load it in linux. You'd have to find out what device it is. Sometimes a black list for driver would stop it.

I disabled tapping and set the acceleration to zero but the touchpad still very sensitive, is there any 'hack' to fix this problem ?

Update : I disabled the trackpad in the BIOS but it takes no action at all, the pad still fully functional on Ubunbu this is ridiculous !!!
The worst part is the scrolling can't be disabled, the screen jumping up and down while I put my palm on the pad without typing, I guess I will cut the connection to the pad, I started to hate this notebook !!!

In most cases bios should kill the device. Wonder why not. Modern linux doesn't fully need bios to detect hardware but usually follows disabled devices.

See what device it is and see if you can blacklist it.

Even more strange is that, the right tapping works at the right portion of the pad on win8, but only works at the lower right corner of the pad on Ubuntu !

both me and jefro have given specific advice on your problem.
have you tried any of it?
if you need further help, you should report back with how that went.

Thank guys, the BIOS has no effect at all Ubuntu completely bypassed it, and gpointing-device-settings can only disable tapping, cursor control and scrolling still work, most annoying is the scrolling, the screen jumps when my palm rest on the pad while typing.

Ed. I know I can disable the pad when typing, but the screen will scroll some times that's what happen to me.

have you tried the arch wiki entry?
but i guess ubuntu with all its "user friendliness" doesn't allow you to make such subtle changes to your system, so blacklisting the device will be your only choice.

Sorry to revive an older thread but, I have been working on a simple way to do this on my T440 for about an hour and I think I have one.

$ synclient AreaBottomEdge=100

This basically defines the entire touchpad as a no movement zone. Thus leaving your ability to press-click the pad as a mouse button, corners included, without the cursor wiggling all over and leaves you the red stick for navigation which is what I use by default (I'm an old thinkpad user)

Then I put that line in my .profile so that it runs every time I log in and viola, the touchpad is disabled for movement but all the press-clicks still work fine. Still testing so if anyone has a more elegant way of doing this I'd love to know.
