Debian hangs on shutdown (X220)

About two weeks ago, a Debian Testing update broke my shutdown procedure. Lines scroll by alerting me as individual processes stop, with a green OK by each, but inevitably the system will display,

Code:
Will now halt.
[ 957.858824] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode: last cmd = 0x01970700
spin down the hard drive, and completely lock up, forcing me to do a hard reset. Any ideas on what I can do for a smoother shutdown?
