Debian 4.0 with gnome on compaq presario V6301AU


Im trying to install debian etch with a gnome desktop on my presario v6301au laptop, each time i try installing it with gnome and the vesa driver, however when i go to boot up with the gdm the screen is white, the laptop has an amd turion x2 64bit processor in it. and i am using the amd64 version of debian. any ideas of what else i can do to get either gnome or kde installed on it

What video card does it have? Maybe the vendor's video driver would work better.

its an nvidia graphics card, and the driver for this specific card does not come pre loaded on debian or with gnome

You can get to a shell with CTRL+Alt+F1. From there, you can edit your /etc/apt/sources.list and make sure you have the contrib and non-free repositories. Then just install and use module-assistant to build the drivers for you. Here's a howto.
