Compaq Presario 1247 400 MHz 128 MB Ram 4GB HD

Compaq Presario 1247 CPU AMD 400 MHz 156 MB Ram 4GB HD

I got this old laptop given to me as present. Anyone got any ideas which distro to use to replace WinXP Pro SP2?

I have no intention of upgrading RAM or HD. It has a USB socket probably USB1 besides CD Optical and Floppy drives. With WXP it connects quite well through the Ethernet to a Siemens SL2-141 Router.

Something light like Slackware, Vector, ArchLinux, etc. Maybe Debian, if you keep the installed packages down.

LOL.

I have that same laptop. Yea slackware runs ok.. have gentoo on mine. Nothing heavier though and with slackware, don't do a full install with the 4gig hard drive. Slim it down a bit.

I would suggest Tinycore 2.1 with Xfbdev.tce, Opera.tcz, flash10.tcz, XFW.tcz, and XFE.tcz.
That'll give you a web browser with flash10, good sound(loud), a file manager
and a text editor.
you gotta use Xfbdev for frame buffer(vga=788, vga=791, etc)

Here's some pics of mine; also with gimp2, on my 160mb toshiba 7000CT
I custom made the themes for JWM
all that is about 60MB!!!
Leaving you with 3.8+GB hd room

with opera open, it goes to about 16-20% ram
