Brightness of my laptop Samsung r509 (ubuntu)

Hi I have a problem with brightness of my laptop!
With ubuntu it is very slow and so during the night it is useless! Could you help me? I tried with the combinations Fn + arrow up but it does not work even if, when i press the buttons, the moving bar appears on the screen.

I am n00b with linux...

There are some good instructions about how to do this for an N150 running Arch Linux here. They might give some clues to help solve your problem.
