problems booting into ubuntu with laptop samsung r40

Hi, first of all I already found a workaround for the mentioned problem. Unfortunately I still don't know what was the cause of it and I would definetely appreciate if someone could shed some light on this.

The laptop has a duo 2 core and a dual boot with windows xp(32bit). Windows booted without problems. Ubuntu 8.04-64bit version sometimes boots sometimes hangs completely and sometimes some hardware elements are not available, i. e. network card. Simply not there...

The workaround now is that I boot in "recovery mode" and then switch to sth like "proceed normal boot"... Then no problems. It doesn't take much longer than usual.

If I choose the usual button to start it may take 1 - 5 attempts to get started. I tried to install a 32bit version but that installation failed. Do you have an explanation for this? Would be interesting.

Cheers, J
